MICE in Cartagena

Caribbean Luxury & UNESCO Heritage

Cartagena is the crown jewel of Colombian tourism and the country’s premier luxury MICE destination. A UNESCO World Heritage colonial city on the Caribbean coast, it combines centuries of history with modern convention facilities and an impressive concentration of international luxury hotels. Colombia ranked 3rd in Latin America for international meetings in 2024 (114 events), and Cartagena is the primary driver of that position for high-profile events.

Hotel Landscape

Cartagena has the highest concentration of luxury hotel brands in Colombia.

Luxury chains: Sofitel Legend Santa Clara (Walled City — colonial convent conversion), Hyatt Regency (380 rooms + 33 suites, Bocagrande), Hilton (beachfront, Bocagrande), InterContinental, Hotel Las Américas (resort complex), Charleston Santa Teresa (Walled City boutique). Four Seasons Cartagena is scheduled to open late 2025/2026.

Districts: Bocagrande has the largest MICE hotel cluster — modern high-rises on the beach. The Walled City (Ciudad Amurallada) offers boutique luxury in colonial mansions. Getsemaní is an emerging creative neighborhood adjacent to the convention center.

Rates: Cartagena is the most expensive Colombian MICE destination. Walled City boutique hotels run USD 120–180/night, Bocagrande luxury USD 90–150/night. Still significantly cheaper than Cancún, Punta Cana, or San Juan for equivalent quality.

Transportation & Access

Rafael Núñez International Airport (CTG) — 19 airlines serving 25 international airports. Direct flights from Miami (American, Avianca), Fort Lauderdale (JetBlue, Spirit), New York JFK (Avianca, JetBlue — 8 weekly), Atlanta (Delta), and Panama City (Copa). Multiple daily domestics to Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. No direct European service — connections via Bogotá or Miami.

Transfer times: Airport to Bocagrande hotels: 10–15 minutes. Airport to Walled City: 10–20 minutes. Airport to Las Américas: 5–10 minutes. Exceptionally convenient compared to most Latin American MICE destinations.

Events Track Record

Dining & Incentive Experiences

Fine dining: Carmen (contemporary Caribbean in a colonial mansion — ideal for corporate dinners), La Vitrola (iconic Cuban-colonial atmosphere), Marea by Rausch (in the convention center, bay views).

Incentive excursions: Rosario Islands (120,000-hectare national park, 45 min by speedboat), private yacht charters, Barú beach clubs with full group buyouts, colonial Walled City walking tours, cumbia and champeta dance experiences, horse-drawn carriage gala arrivals through colonial streets.
